Sadiq Khan's DVLA conviction for failing to pay car tax quashed after falling victim to 'scam'

A conviction against Sir Sadiq Khan has been quashed after the London Mayor was accused of failing to pay car tax on a vehicle, which he described as a "scam".

Following a request from the DVLA, a hearing at Hereford Magistrates' Court on Thursday scrapped the conviction against Sir Sadiq Khan.

In August, a criminal prosecution was brought by the DVLA after the Mayor was accused of failing to pay car tax on a 24-year-old Nissan Micra.

Following a controversial Single Justice Procedure case, the Mayor was ordered to pay a fine of £220, as well as £85 in costs and to settle a £35.84 bill in unpaid tax.

City Hall officials hit back at the conviction, arguing that the car does not belong to the Mayor, nor Transport for London.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London told GB News: "This is a scam, which is a crime.

"It's not the first time the Mayor has been victim of a scam involving people falsely stating that Sadiq is the owner of a vehicle. Such behaviour is illegal, and the DVLA are aware."
