Watch toe-curling moment Sinn Fein MEP is left red-faced at EU meeting as Irish language complaint spectacularly backfires
Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan found herself entangled in an excruciating exchange over the use of the Irish language during an EU meeting.
The politician was caught out after complaining that there was no option to deliver her points in Gaelic.
“It's unfortunate that we can't use our own language in this committee, but I will continue now in English,” Ms Boylan said to lawmakers during the meeting on EU Foreign Affairs.
“You can, you can,” the committee chair interrupted.
Evidently not expected to receive that information, the Sinn Fein MEP responded: “Ah, okay. We didn't know. Sorry.”
“I'll continue in English, because I wasn't prepared,” she admitted awkwardly before continuing on to her question.
