Sadiq Khan revels in Donald Trump’s crushing Midterms defeat amid bitter feud with US president

Sadiq Khan has celebrated the “true rejection” of President Donald Trump after he was handed a historic drubbing in the US midterm elections.

The London Mayor reignited his long-running feud with the American leader as the Republican Party lost both the House and Senate to left-wing Democratic rivals.

With Republicans out of the legislative driver's seat, President Trump could see the remaining two years of his presidency end in deadlock at best or impeachment at worst.

As the scale of the American public’s rebuke became clear, Lord Khan took to social media to share his joy at the result.

“Congratulations to Democrats on a huge victory last night,” he wrote on X.

“With a focus on hope, unity and supporting families with the cost of living - their campaign was a true rejection of the damaging and divisive politics of Donald Trump,” the Labour peer declared.

The gleeful message struck a different tone from Lord Khan’s comments upon President Trump’s stunning 2024 victory, where he said: “Many Londoners will be anxious” and “fearful about what it will mean for democracy and for women’s rights.”

“London is – and will always be – for everyone. We will always be pro-women, pro-diversity, pro-climate and pro-human rights,” he insisted in the mournful post.

Lord Khan’s latest remarks, yet to draw a response from President Trump, reignited a years-long battle of words between the two men.

The London Mayor has previously accused the US leader of being a “bully” and declared he was “racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic.”

He also described Mr Trump’s rhetoric as “animus, hatred and bile” and compared it to “the fascists of the 20th century”.

Over the summer, the US President told British reporters that Lord Khan was “grossly incompetent, a bad person, and a horrible representative for your country”.

Mr Trump blamed the London mayor for rampant crime and demographic transformation of the capital.

“London is a very different place, with a terrible Mayor. You have a terrible Mayor there, some terrible people. But it's a very different place,” he said.

A spokesman for Lord Khan hit back, claiming: “The Mayor is clearly still living rent free in Donald's Trump's head. He's obsessed with him. Sadiq could probably claim squatters rights.”

The London Mayor echoed the statements, describing Mr Trump as being “obsessed” with him.

“When somebody attacks my city, our citizens, our values, our way of life — when somebody makes certain generalisations about the followers of one faith — I think it’s incumbent to stand up to them,” he declared.

Mr Trump branded the Lord Khan a “horrible, vicious, disgusting mayor” who had done a “terrible job”.

Their feud led the US President to demand that the London Mayor not be invited to the State Banquet at Windsor Castle during his state visit last year, saying aboard Air Force One: “I didn't want him there, I asked that he not be there.”

The feud between the two men has endured for more than 10 years, beginning with Mr Trump announcing his plan to block Muslims from entering the United States during his first successful campaign to take the White House in 2015.

Over the years, the pair have regularly traded blows on social media and in media interviews.
