By-election fever Britain with 14 seats up for grabs nationwide

Councils across the UK are set for a busy week as 14 seats are up for grabs across England, Wales and Scotland this week

Multiple councillors being called up to the Senedd in May has left Wales with numerous seats on offer, as well as a variety of seats across England.

Your vote could play a key role in your area: see if your ward is up for election below.

Regents Park (Camden)

A by-election is due to unfolded on Camden Council – called after the resignation of the Green Party’s Muhammed Abu Naser in May.

Elected as a ward councillor, he was unable to take his seat because he was ineligible to stand in the first place, being a council employee – forcing his resignation just days after the election results.

The Green Party are defending the seat on the Labour-dominated council, already boasting ten councillors within the authority.

Splott (Cardiff)

Cardiff Council is holding a by-election after former councillor Huw Thomas was elected as one of the six members of the Senedd for Caerdydd Penarth back in May.

Labour are defending this seat, aiming to retain the position to further bolster their dominant majority on Cardiff Council with a whopping 49 elected members.

Argoed & New Brighton (Flintshire)

The Argoed and New Brighton seat on Flintshire Council is among two up for grabs here – with this ward vacant after the death of councillor Hilary McGuill, aged 79.

The Liberal Democrats are defending the seat on this highly contested council, which possesses a sizeable Labour majority and a large number of independent and hyper-local members.

Connah's Quay (Flintshire)

Meanwhile, the Connah's Quay seat on Flintshire Council is also up for the taking, after the seat became vacant with the resignation of Independent councillor Bernie Attridge, who had served on the council for more than two decades.

The ward was heavily in favour of this independent councillor, leaving room for parties or independent and hyper-local candidates to swoop in and add to their ranks.

High Fell (Gateshead)

A by-election has been called in the ward of High Fell in Gateshead after Reform UK’s successful candidate from the local May elections, Danielle Cavanagh, stood down.

Gateshead Council’s recently elected Reform majority has officially stated it will refund the cost of the by-election by having one of its cabinet members forgo their special responsibility allowance for this year.

Clapham Park and Streatham St Leonard's (Lambeth)

Lambeth will be the scene of multiple by-elections this week as Clapham Park and Streatham St Leonard's wards are both up for grabs this week.

The by-election has been called in Clapham Park after Green Party Councillor Joanna Eaves resigned due to ill health. Streatham St Leonard's by-election has been called due to the previously elected candidate not signing a declaration of acceptance.

Trebanos (Neath Port Talbot)

A former Plaid Cymru seat has opened up for candidates after councillor Rebeca Philips was elected to be a Member of the Senedd to represent the Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd constituency.

Plaid Cymru held a near 70 per cent majority during elections in 2022, and will be hoping for the same again.

Suffield Park (North Norfolk)

Norfolk is set for a change on Thursday after Emma Tooke, a Lib Dem councillor, resigned her role for family reasons.

The Conservatives will be hoping for a strong showing after taking the second-largest vote in the 2023 election behind the Lib Dems.

Pembroke Dock: Market (Pembrokeshire)

Pembroke is bracing for a by-election after the long-standing councillor Brian Hall died.

He had served the ward for over 30 years, having been elected in 1996, working as an independent councillor.

Seven candidates will be vying for the long-held spot.

In one of the smallest battles across the UK, only four candidates will battle for the Larkhall ward seat.

Kinwarton (Stratford-on-Avon)

The Midlands will see a by-election this week after Liberal Democrat council member Thom Holmes resigned from the post.

He left after more than three years in the role, with five candidates aiming to be his replacement.

Baruc (The Vale of Glamorgan)

Voters in the Baruc ward will go to the polls on July 9 to choose a new county councillor after Mark Hooper was elected to the Senedd, leaving the seat vacant.

Baruc covers Garden Suburb, Knap and Parade, Romilly Park, Barry Island, and the southern part of the Waterfront.
