Shabana Mahmood’s new Afghanistan and Palestine refugee scheme slammed: ‘Terrible timing!’

Shabana Mahmood’s new plan to “fast-track” refugees in new routes to the UK has been slammed for “terrible” timing.

Speaking at the Labour Party conference today, the Home Secretary announced the reopening of a resettlement scheme for “vulnerable” migrants.

The plan will target the “most vulnerable” refugees, including women and girls in Afghanistan, Palestinians with critical medical needs and survivors of torture.

Those accepted will receive immediate, indefinite leave to remain, unlike other refugees whose status is reviewed every 30 months.

“I think the timing of this is terrible. And I think people around her will know it as well,” Editor of Pakistan Playbook Dan Qayyum told GB News.

Despite some praise for shrewd elements of Ms Mahmood’s speech, Mr Qayyum noted what was missing from her address.

“I heard nothing on the boats that landed on beaches this week… this comes in a week when 781 people crossed the Channel in a day,” he said.

Taking issue with the refugee plan itself, he added that the Home Secretary had provided “no numbers for any of these new routes and no cap figures”.
