Scandal-ridden Democrat quits Senate race after rape allegation derails campaign
A scandal-ridden Democrat has quit his Senate race after a rape allegation derailed his campaign.
Graham Platner, who was the Democratic candidate for Senate in Maine, has suspended his campaign just five days before the deadline to find a replacement.
Mr Platner has said the allegations were "troubling, serious, and false. Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue".
The oyster farmer had been backed by high-profile progressive Senator Bernie Sanders, had faced several scandals concerning his romantic life, social media, and a Nazi tattoo.
