Keir Starmer braces for no-confidence vote as Labour MPs told: 'This farce must end!'

Sir Keir Starmer has been left bracing for a no-confidence vote after almost 100 Labour MPs called on the Prime Minister to resign.

Dave Doogan, who this week replaced Stephen Flynn as the Scottish National Party's leader in Westminster, this morning threatened to force a vote on Sir Keir's future following the King's Speech.

Mr Doogan is urging Cabinet ministers to end the crisis engulfing No10 by making the Prime Minister's position untenable.

The Angus & Perthshire Glens MP vowed to table a motion of no-confidence if Labour MPs fail to force Sir Keir out of Downing Street.

Speaking ahead of the King's Speech, Mr Doogan said: “This farce has to end now so Parliament can focus on the issues that really matter.

“It’s clear the only way that can happen is for Keir Starmer to go.

“He has lost the confidence of voters and his own MPs, and there’s no coming back from that.

“The Labour Party must stop dragging this crisis out and put an end to it now.

“If the Labour Cabinet ministers don’t have the decency to do the right thing – then Parliament must.

“Unless they put an end to this chaos now, the SNP will table a motion of no confidence in Keir Starmer to draw things to a close.”

Sir Keir secured the keys to No10 after securing a thumping 174-seat majority in the 2024 General Election.

However, a series of revolts have slowly whittled away the Prime Minister's authority.

More than 90 Labour MPs have now called on Sir Keir to step down, wiping out the Prime Minister's majority in the House of Commons.

However, it would seem unlikely that Labour MPs would want to force a snap general election by voting in favour of the SNP's amendment.

Labour is languishing behind Reform UK in the polls, with Nigel Farage's party picking up more than 1,400 council seats in last week's local elections.

A group of more than 100 Labour MPs have also signed a letter expressing their support for the Prime Minister.

The letter, which was released following the announcement that 10 Labour MPs had resigned from the frontbench, warned: "This is no time for a leadership contest."
