Israel 'warned Britain of Iranian attack' just days before Labour slapped it with sanctions

Israel warned Britain of an Iranian-sponsored attack on the country in early September, Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed.

The Israeli Prime Minister said his country's intelligence had tipped off UK authorities just before Ed Miliband's sanctions against Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

"We gave the Brits the intel that there was going to be an attack - and it was an Iranian-sponsored attack - but the next day, they slapped sanctions on us," he told Fox News.

It remains unclear whether he was referring to the RAF Fairford incident.

But he was asked about the "recent scare" in the UK, and Mr Netanyahu referenced "this thing in Britain" before revealing his country's tip-off.

His intervention comes after Donald Trump teased that more information will emerge later later today on why five suspects in the alleged plot were released on bail.

While Andy Burnham has revealed there are “strong indications” Iran played a part in the security scare.

The Prime Minister confirmed the incident remains the subject of an ongoing police investigation after five men were arrested on suspicion of preparing to carry out a terrorist attack.

Speaking to GB News, Mr Burnham said: “What I can say is that there are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend.

“It is, though, still an ongoing and very serious police investigation.

“So I hope you’ll understand that I don’t say more at this point, but I wanted to confirm what we can say.

“This will continue now. It’s obviously a very serious investigation involving our colleagues in the United States, and we are working very closely with them.”

He added: “I will say more when I can. Obviously, I’ve been dealing with this while I’ve been here in Liverpool.

“We have held a Cobra meeting here during the week. We are completely on top of things, but we will say more when we can.”
