'He is not a serious Prime Minister!' Andy Burnham slammed after Celebrity Gogglebox announcement

Andy Burnham has become the first Prime Minister to join Celebrity Gogglebox for a charity special on Channel 4.

On Friday, the Makerfield MP will appear on Gogglebox's Stand Up To Cancer special from inside No10 and will be joined by Liverpool Mayor Steve Rotheram.

The pair will appear on the nation's televisions to chat through some of Britain's TV as Mr Burnham continues his drive to reach out to "normal" people.

The Prime Minister will be joined by the likes of comedian Joe Lycett and the Sugababes, with more names expected to be announced ahead of the episode special.

The show, which was filmed out of work hours, will air at 9.05pm tomorrow night.

A short teaser trailer of the Labour leader and Liverpool Mayor was shared on social media, with Mr Burnham asking his "friend Steve" what snack he would like.

"I've got Skips, pork scratchings, Twiglets... Twiglets are probably best, aren't they?" the so-called "King of the North" could be heard saying.

But, with two weeks to go until his maiden Budget, Mr Burnham came under fire for not being a "serious" Prime Minister.

Louie French, the Shadow Culture Minister, told GB News: "Britain’s debt is growing, our economy is stagnating, and the world is becoming more dangerous.

"But don’t worry we know what Andy Burnham’s favourite crisps are and can watch him on GoggleBox. He is not a serious PM."

Meanwhile, another Tory source told The People's Channel that Kemi Badenoch should be invited onto the show.

One insider said: "It's Channel 4's job to ensure political balance."

Earlier in his premiership, Mr Burnham's closest colleagues were forced to brush off claims their boss was "too blokey".

No10 advisers were said to have urged the incoming Prime Minister to tone down the number of football and pub references in his political rhetoric.

Anna Turley, a Home Office minister, backed Mr Burnham's latest social media video ranking bar snacks to advertise the Government's cut to business rates for hospitality.

A video of Mr Burnham and his Chancellor, John Healey, speaking about their favourite snacks was watched more than five million times on X alone.

The Labour MP insisted Mr Burnham's style was "reaching people", adding: "I think he is very authentic.

"That’s who he is and I think people want to see a politician who is who they are...

"Our communication has gone up substantially in terms of being authentic and reaching people."

Praising his "accessible" style, Ms Turley added: "As someone who likes football and has the occasional pint as well and quite enjoys pub snacks, I've got no problem with his content so far, and it's great to see him out engaging with the public."
