Gorton and Denton by-election results: Keir Starmer's future hangs in balance as polls close in crucial vote

Voting has closed for the Gorton and Denton by-election, the results of which could play a pivotal role in Sir Keir Starmer's political future.

Considered one of the most unpredictable by-elections in recent years, the Greater Manchester constituency has been a three-way battle between Labour, the Greens and Reform UK.

The contest was triggered after the resignation of Andrew Gwynne, who was a sitting independent following his suspension from the Labour Party.

Mr Gwynne won the seat in 2024 with more than half the vote, but had the whip removed after offensive WhatsApp messages of his came to light.

The mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, was snubbed from running after the Prime Minister’s allies blocked him.

Today was the second parliamentary by-election under Sir Keir's Government, after Sarah Pochin won in Runcorn and Helsby last year.

Polling stations opened at 7am and have closed at 10pm.
