Elon Musk spends $275million helping Donald Trump fight US mid-term battle
Elon Musk has channelled upwards of $276million to support Donald Trump and his own super PAC (Political Action Committee), as the US President's popularity figures continue to diminish ahead of the midterm elections.
The funding was confirmed by a spokesman for Mr Musk's America PAC on Monday, ahead of a Federal Election Commission filing deadline on Thursday.
The sheer scale of the spending sits awkwardly alongside a pledge Musk made less than two years ago: "In terms of political spending, I'm going to do a lot less in the future," he remarked in May 2025.
Far from scaling back, the world's wealthiest person has now committed roughly $366million to federal committees across the entire 2025-26 election cycle - comfortably surpassing the approximately $290million he spent helping return President Trump to the White House in 2024.
The lion's share of the Tesla boss' recent funding - some $158million - was directed to the Senate Leadership Fund, the principal super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates.
That single contribution represents the most the organisation has ever received from one donor in a quarter, and exceeds the total raised by its Democratic counterpart from all sources over the same period.
A further $76million flowed into America PAC, the super PAC Mr Musk established in 2024, which has built an extensive ground operation spanning seven Senate battlegrounds and close to three dozen House contests.

Beyond those headline sums, Mr Musk's representatives disclosed additional donations made between July and September: $20million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the main House Republican super PAC; $10million to the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which backs Texas Senate nominee Ken Paxton; $10million to the Republican Governors Association; and $2million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
On the ground, America PAC deployed nearly 3,000 paid canvassers last week nationwide, with Texas receiving particular attention.
Mr Musk, who resides in Austin and holds substantial business interests and property across the state, delivered his $10million to Mr Paxton's super PAC at a moment when the Republican was being significantly outspent.
This renewed spending spree comes against the backdrop of a repaired relationship between Mr Musk and President Trump.

Following a very public rupture over the President's domestic policy legislation, the two have appeared together at three events in the past fortnight.
The President recently bestowed the National Medal of Science upon Mr Musk, calling him "our modern-day Thomas Edison."
Despite pouring record sums into the midterms, Mr Musk's personal involvement has diminished markedly compared with two years ago, with his barnstorming rallies absent this time round.
Day-to-day operational decisions at America PAC have been entrusted to Chris Young, his chief adviser.

Friends who have spoken with Musk in recent months say he rarely raises the midterms or the Trump presidency, preferring to concentrate on his business ventures.
His activity on X tells a similar story. A review found just seven direct posts this year referencing candidates in competitive midterm races - five concerning Talarico and one seemingly critical of Senator Susan Collins, a vulnerable Republican in Maine.
The $276million disclosed figure also understates his true outlay. Mr Musk has additionally made seven-figure donations through organisations not obliged to reveal their backers.
