Andy Burnham handed stark warning as almost 10,000 domestic abusers set for early release: 'Women and children are in danger!'

Andy Burnham has been warned that women and children across the country are in "deep danger" as almost 10,000 domestic abusers are set to become eligible for early release.

Speaking to GB News, Executive Chair of the Women’s Policy Centre Paola Diana hit out at the Prime Minister over his decision not to exclude domestic abuse cases in his reforms of the scheme.

Earlier this week, Mr Burnham blocked grooming gang rapists from upcoming changes to prison sentences as part of a push to protect the public from dangerous criminals.

However, thousands of other criminals will be allowed to be freed, with some only having served a third of their sentence.

Terrified survivors have railed against the plan to let 9,371 convicted abusers out by the end of Parliament in 2029.

Discussing the reforms on GB News, Ms Diana declared the move by Mr Burnham "tragic".

She said: "This is tragic. This is the only word that can come out of my mouth.

"I'm deeply worried for all the victims of these abusers, because we know that many of them, if not the majority, might offend again."

Ms Diana warned the Prime Minister that the victims and survivors, primarily women and children, are in "deep danger" if their abusers are free to walk from prison.

She stressed: "These women are now and their children are now in deep, deep danger, and what struck me is the priority of this Government.

"They talk about defending women, but they never do that, they actually do the opposite, and this is what's happening right now.'

Ms Diana argued that the women and children will be the ones that "pay the price" when their abusers are released.

She told GB News: "While our Prime Minister goes on holiday, our streets will be flooded with these criminals and abusers and women and children, we know they are the ones who will pay the higher price.

"I was looking at the data, roughly 10,700 foreign nationals are now in our prisons. Well, why don't we deport them instead of releasing our abusers on the streets? Why don't we clear some space in the prisons?

"This should be a priority for the Government, but of course, now the priority is going on holiday, right? Which captain goes on holiday when his people are in danger?

"I'm furious about what's happening in this country, honestly."

In a statement posted to social media, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has assured that the reforms to early release "will make a difference".

He told Britons: "I do not pretend it is a perfect solution or that it goes as far as I would like.

"My commitment over the months and years ahead is to rebuild our justice system so that it commands the confidence of the public.

"This will not happen overnight and nor without difficulty, but we will deliver a justice system that the British people expect and deserve."
