Andy Burnham and Volodymyr Zelensky share handshake in first meeting between new PM and Ukrainian leader
Andy Burnham and Volodymyr Zelensky shared a warm handshake as the two leaders met for the first time at a naval base in Portsmouth.
The pair stood in the shadow of aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth as they observed renditions of national anthems from a naval band.
Speaking after their first meeting, Mr Burnham promised that Ukraine can “count on me” as he pledged to visit the embattled Eastern European nation “soon”.
He became the fourth Prime Minister to welcome Mr Zelensky to the UK since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
